Zipper Jewelry - Mora's Jeweler Spotlight
Mora is pleased to announce Kate Cusack as the featured jeweler
in its Spotlight Series for the month of October. On Friday, October 6th from 5:00-8:00pm, Mora is hosting an opening
reception for the exhibition. The event is free, and all are invited to attend.
"Kate
Cusack creates awe-inspiring wearable art from a single and very surprising
material—the zipper. Dispensing entirely with the zipper’s function to
concentrate solely on its form, Cusack makes magic from this modest material. Sometimes
she leaves the textile intact, layering and manipulating the zippers into
dynamic new dimensions. Trimming off the textile and setting the zipper teeth
on end creates a finer line for Cusack to multiply and weave into compelling
compositions. Her mastery of the material is evident both in her ingenious
structures and her expert craftsmanship—meticulously well-made jewelry that is truly
couture. Cusack’s elegant zipper jewelry is a striking reminder of the power of
imagination and the joy of discovering beauty in something we encounter every
day." - Marthe Le Van, owner of Mora Jewelry

About the exhibition from The Denton Arts Council:
"Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition, began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. Now in its 30th year, the exhibition opens to international artists as we celebrate the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media.
In this anniversary year, GDAC is thrilled to partner with the National Endowment for the Arts to expand this national exhibition to now include international artists. The exhibition drew over 1,400 submissions from 21 countries around the world. Juror JoAnn Edwards selected 93 works for exhibition at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center including works from Denmark, Singapore, Sweden, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States"

The exhibit features artists that comment on luxury, artificiality, consumption,
ornament, and the line between the beautiful and the grotesque. Whether a
wall installation composed of silver reflective woven strips of paper,
polymer works that look like banquet centerpieces, or extravagant,
colorful jewelry, these artists investigate contemporary cultural,
social, and historical ideas.
Many thanks to Lena Vigna for including Kate's designs.
