Zipper Jewelry in "Dubh/Dialogues in Black" exhibit at American Irish Historical Society

Three of Kate's Zipper Necklaces are featured in the exhibit titled "Dubh/Dialogues in Black" which is currently on view at the American Irish Historical Society (991 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY) through November 13th, 2011. The exhibit was curated by Brian Kennedy and focuses on contemporary jewelry and objects that are all black in color but also black in "mood." Following the showing in New York, the exhibition will travel to Ireland where it will appear at Oliver Sears Gallery, Molesworth Street, Dublin from February 2 to March 15, 2012.

This is the second in a series of three exhibitions taking place under the direction of designer Joseph Walsh in an exciting new initiative called STUDIO practice established to facilitate dialogue, build relationships and encourage interdisciplinary engagements between Irish artists, designers and studio makers and their international contemporaries.

Z for Zipper Necklace: ABeCeDarian Exhibition

Kate Cusack's Zipper Necklace, "Elizabeth" represents the letter Z at Facere Jewelry Art Gallery's ABeCeDarian Exhibition.

26 artists were asked to create a piece of jewelry to correspond to a letter of the alphabet. Facere produced a book to correspond with the exhibition. To purchase a copy of the book or any of the pieces included in the exhibition, please contact Facere directly.

Kate Cusack’s zipper jewelry is a culmination of her experiences transforming unusual materials in the world of costume design, window displays and sculptural/wearable designs. The pieces Kate creates are made from seemingly mundane materials and come to life when they are worn.

Kate crafts each piece by hand using nothing but zippers.
She is based in Brooklyn, New York.

"Salon: Inventive Art-Jewelry in an Inventable Space,"

"Salon" showcases the art-jewelry of seven artists in an inventable, temporary gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The group exhibition curated by Brooklyn based art-jeweler, Mia Hebib, is held at Metropolitan Green, a LEED certified building with a unique space dubbed an "inventable space."

Ms. Hebib has selected this group of mostly Brooklyn based jewelry artists in order to introduce a bigger audience to the world of studio art-jewelry, to connect artists, foster new relationships, and encourage creative collaborations within the art community.

Seeking a formal environment to showcase exquisite, progressive and hand crafted jewelry, the curator, Ms. Hebib transformed a raw space into a temporary gallery. "Salon" connects the art and fashion components of art-jewelry in an intimate and unique setting. Many designers and artists create "pop-ups" in response to the unstable economic landscape. Ms. Hebib notes, "In times like this people’s creativity, confidence and inventiveness will push the boundaries and open up new channels for the art world to progress. This small ‘Salon’ is the first step for a very active and prolific art-jewelry scene and we hope is just the beginning."

In addition to showcasing a select grouping of art-jewelry, Ms. Hebib has commissioned each of the participating artists to create a finished segment that will be combined with the others into one collective necklace. This "Exquisite Corpse Necklace" takes its cues from the surrealist drawing exercise in which many artists contribute individual parts to create an exciting, unpredictable artwork. "This is mostly known as a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled," Ms. Hebib explains. "In this format each artist will contribute a segment into a necklace thus symbolically connecting all of the artists."

How did you think of using zipper to make jewelry?
My specific fascination with zippers comes from my general love of transforming ordinary materials into wearable objects of art.The pieces that I create are made from seemingly mundane materials and come to life when they are worn. The body is my canvas: I am fascinated by adornment, and excess. I am inspired by the repetition of ordinary items. I enjoy the sense of humor in elevating an ordinary item into something extraordinary.
When I see one item repeated in large quantity or in an extreme size, I start to see it in its very basic visual form. I begin to make associations based on shape, color and texture and I am freed from traditional restrains about what that item or material should be used for.

Can you say something about the sale of Zipper Jewelry?
Traditional jewelry, made with precious stones and metals, has a specific value attached to it because of the materials involved. Because the basic material of Zipper Jewelry is not highly valued like a diamond, the price of the Zipper Jewelry is derived from the value of the creativity and skill necessary to create it.

Do you ever think of using precious stone and noble metal as material to make jewelry?
Because I am not trained as a metal-smith or a traditional jeweler, I don’t consider precious stones or metal as materials for my work. I am more interested in working with unlikely materials and transforming them into new creations. There is an exciting “a-ha” moment when someone realizes that there is more to the design they are looking at.

Do you think luxurious jewelry is more attractive? Why?
I think there is a very special place for luxurious, traditional jewelry using metals and precious stones. It is a very different experience to wear traditional jewelry than to wear art-jewelry. I don’t necessarily think one is more attractive than the other. Good design and clever ideas are what make something attractive, to me. In my Zipper Jewelry, I make reference to traditional jewelry, but I add a twist of creativity, which makes it exciting and daring.

For Kate Cusack, the New York-based jewelery designer, costumer and wig-maker, her iPod's shuffle setting is an apt metaphor for the ups and downs of her hectic lifestyle, “The shuffle bounces all over the place and reminds me of music I like, but don't always remember to choose. Sometimes the song transition nicely from one to the next for a while, but other times there is a streak of things I am not in the mood for.“

Kate is one of those lucky NYC creative types, cobbling a living from various related pursuits, for whom every day is different. You can often find her at home steadily working in her studio or rushing all over Manhattan shopping for a show. But the young designer says her favorite days are those that combine everything, “when I can pick up supplies I may need for my zipper Jewelry while I am out looking for fabric for costumes.”

Her first Zipper Pin came about in 2002. Having recently finished designing and creating costumes for a children's dance theater company, she got her hands on bags and bags of zippers. Picking up on the current trends in fashion, the iconic Chanel Camellia and the sartorial thrift from the 1940s (designers used extra fabric from dressmaking as decorative elements), she started experimenting.

The resulting accessories reference the elegance of depression-era resourcefulness while simultaneously deconstructing fashion and costuming—not to mention their readymade aesthetic appeal. The curving, layered forms that Kate comes up with celebrate the sparkle of the metal teeth and the endless possibilities that the linear construction affords. A zipper is, after all, little more than a line, perhaps the simplest of design building blocks.

Her costume design career and zipper jewelry have grown on parallel, sometimes intersecting, tracks over the past few years. After spending four years studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art, creating costumes made of unlikely materials and collaborating with the community on parades and festivals, she moved back to New York. There, she found work designing costumes for a number of small off-off-Broadway shows, as well as at top NYC costume shop Parsons-Meares where she made costumes for Broadway and Disney.

Squeezing in stints as a window dresser, it was when creating five Marie-Antoinette-style wigs made entirely from plastic wrap for Tiffany & Co.'s 5th Avenue store, that her zipper jewelry first got noticed. The woman in the visual merchandising department who hired Kate admired the zipper pin she'd affixed to her jacket so Kate made the second zipper pin as a thank you.

Currently enrolled in a rigorous three-year MFA program at the Yale School of Drama, Kate continues to produce her line of zipper jewelry and recently finished designing costumes for a series of short plays based on the life of Barack Obama called "Obama Drama." And, of course, the one-woman wonder also finds time to maintain a blog called “Kate Update" for her most current work and magazine features, etc.
